Griff's rules for well run chat room

The following are principle for running a chat room as I think it should be run. At Erotic Sex Chat a user can create a room. The user who creates the room can then “kick” other users from the room.

When rooms are open to all comers, they risk getting overwhelmed by participants who are either inarticulate (low verbal skills) or the conversation gets dumbed-down because it's scrolling so quickly*. See below the break for the ten rules.

1. Greeters. The moderator should appoint someone to be a greeter. This appointment should be for 5-15 minutes, not an onerous amount of time. When new people come into the room, the greeter welcomes the new people and explains that the room has rules.

2. Upon entering, the new person acknowledges the greeter and any friends s/he has in one line. This greeting shall be acknowledged by the first friend mentioned. If s/he misses it, the second friend.

3. Screen names. No screen names that suck! The screen name shall be concise (not obnoxiously long), describe the person, her/his predilictions, be a name (preferably not bland) or be witty in some way. No fucking penis screen names, including "hard" screen names. And no "34 f". Make an effort people.

4. What is your quest!? Upon arriving the person shall state what s/he's looking for. If you are going to chat in the advanced room, you should have something more specific in mind than “looking for sexy female who wants to chat with me”. Experiment in the other rooms until you learn what kind of fantasies arouse you.

5. When you approach someone, introduce yourself. a. Who are you? b. What do you want? c. What caught your interest about that person?

6. Respond when spoken to. If someone Pms you, PM back. It's ok to say “no thanks”. If you having cybersex hot and heavy, got create your own private room. That way you won't be interrupted and neither will your partner(s).

7. Do not use the same approach or line over-and-over. It's annoying. Also, if there are more than a few women in the room and you're hitting on all of them, you're in the wrong place. Rather than trying to have sex with every woman (and failing), try to find one that's a good fit.

8. Aspire to be interesting. Participate in the rooms conversation. This is one area where I prefer to loosen the site rules against talking about religion and politics. If it doesn't take over the room, people should be able to discuss religion and politics. If you're gonna have discussions of scat and a “forced sex fantasy” room, it seems a bit ridiculous you can't make some jokes about Dominique Strauss Khan.

9. You have the right to block anyone, but tell them in the room, so that person doesn't speak to you and expect a response. If someone gets blocked by three people, s/he gets kicked unless someone comes to his or her defense. The moderator will have to use judgment. Remember, it's always possible for factions to start their own rooms.

10. Insulting people is allowed. And the insulted are free to say, “I choose not to listen to the insulter. I'm blocking him/her.”

Because the greeter shall provide the rules when someone enters the room, the person chatting shall have the primary responsibility for understanding the rules. If the moderator or greeter wants to take extra time to explain the rules, s/he can. But "kicking" someone for a single violation is ok too.

* I suspect this happens in part because more people pariticipating causes the room to scroll faster meaning that there is less time to read what gets written. So people shorten what they have to say. It gets pointless to try to have a conversation with twenty or more people trying to get attention by talking and not saying anything.
